Cherilyn Mackrory MP for Truro and Falmouth celebrates St Ewe Eggs who successfully completed their epic 300-mile egg and spoon race on Friday.
The race, which saw two teams with a single uncooked egg each, traverse the northern and southern coastlines of Cornwall across 5 days, with Land’s End making the finish line. St Ewe Eggs’ goal is to raise £1million for Hospitality Action, and Cornwall Air Ambulance, two charities which have seen greater prominence in the community because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The race was also an attempt to break the world record for the longest egg and spoon race and was officiated and monitored throughout by Guinness.
Hospitality Action represent those who work in hotels, bars, pubs, restaurants, schools, and hospitals. The hospitality sector was damaged during the pandemic, and this charity proved essential in offering advice and support to many out of work and who needed help and support during this difficult time in all our lives.
Cornwall Air Ambulance is an essential service which saves lives. They provide critical care to seriously sick and injured people across Cornwall and Isles of Scilly and can reach casualties of an incident far faster and more directly than a conventional ambulance. Running 1000 missions a year, the Air Ambulance team are continually on standby and are a credit to their community and their profession. The Air Ambulance is a charity, and reliant on public funds and the generosity of the community to keep flying.
Cherilyn said:
Our community has been challenged in recent years, especially by the pandemic, and charities like Hospitality Action and Cornwall Air Ambulance have helped pull us through. I know that St Ewe Eggs speaks for all of us in wanting to give something back and show them our support.
This race was also about Cornwall, bridging communities and helping to unite our great county. I know they will inspire others, smash their target, and raise the recognition these worthy charities deserve.
I want to pay tribute to St Ewe Eggs directly. They are a brilliant company who work hard for Cornwall. At a time when many companies are struggling, especially here in rural areas, it is extremely important that we all work together to keep pushing forward. St Ewe Eggs have brought the community together, and I wish them the success they have earned.
St Ewe Eggs CEO Bex Tonks says:
Taking this nostalgic British event to the coast path of Cornwall in aid of two remarkable charities ‘Hospitality Action’ and ‘Cornwall Air Ambulance,’ seems the least we can do in light of all the support they offer.
The egg industry itself has been under huge pressure over the last 3 years and we would like to highlight how extraordinary and nutritious eggs are, and to remind people to support the British food industry; in turn supporting farmers through to restaurateurs.
We are so incredibly humbled by the response to our Egg and Spoon Race, although it will be quite a challenge to complete, especially with a real egg and not a wooden version! We are really looking forward to it and hope we can raise much needed awareness for all the phenomenal work that both Hospitality Action and Cornwall Air Ambulance do, smashing our funding target of £1,000,000, perhaps a bad choice of word there!
Mark Lewis, Chief Executive at Hospitality Action says:
There’s no denying times are incredibly challenging for the hospitality sector; each day brings news of more business closures, putting thousands of jobs in jeopardy. Our services help hospitality people pick up the pieces after a setback, and we are grateful to everyone who reaches out to support our work. To achieve a Guinness World Record is both incredible and inspiring, and we wish everyone taking part the very best of luck.
Tim Bunting, Chief Executive at Cornwall Air Ambulance says:
Events like this are key in helping us to raise awareness and vital funds for Cornwall Air Ambulance. Each year we’re called out to over 1,000 incidents, and one in five of those are to visitors to the area. Summer is our busiest time, as when the population increases so do our call outs, therefore, it’s great that we can work with local businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector to help promote the great work of our crew, staff, and volunteers. We are extremely grateful that St Ewe Eggs have chosen to hold the Great Cornish Egg and Spoon Race in aid of us and we’re very much looking forward to the egg-citing event.
