Cherilyn Mackrory MP for Truro and Falmouth was honoured to greet his royal highness, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh on his visit to Truro today.
His royal highness was received at the Hall for Cornwall. Alongside Cherilyn were the Mayor of Truro, Councillor Carol Swain, the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall Colonel Edward Bolitho, representatives of local government led by Councillor Linda Taylor, and Mr Julien Boast, the CEO and Creative Director at the Hall for Cornwall.
The visit included a tour of the Hall for Cornwall which reopened in 2021 following a massive refurbishment. The focus of the tour was the enduring legacy of performing arts in Cornwall, but also how history and heritage has informed the modern Hall for Cornwall. The Hall is an iconic part of Truro’s cultural and economic past, built in an enduring Italianate architectural style which enhances the prominence of the site.
During the tour, his royal highness was treated to a performance of the short dance piece New Beginnings by Rob Mennear. This piece first premiered for the coronation of King Charles III and was performed by the Hall for Cornwall’s Youth Group.
Following the tour, all guests were treated to a lunch comprised of locally sourced food samples including fresh fish caught by Cornwall’s under 10 metre fishermen.
Cherilyn said:
“It was a real privilege to welcome his royal highness the Duke of Edinburgh to Truro today and to accompany him on the tour of the historic Hall for Cornwall. This was a truly special event, showcasing the best of Cornwall and our hospitality.
“My thanks to Julien and all the team at the Hall for Cornwall. I couldn’t ask for a better way to welcome anyone, especially a member of the royal family, to our community. They really demonstrated the Cornish spirit, putting on a show to make us all proud.”
