Cherilyn Mackrory, Member of Parliament for Truro and Falmouth, has welcomed the news that the Government has pledged an additional £1.6billion to support local authorities like Cornwall Council during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new funding will allow the councils to continue to provide support for vulnerable people during the current crisis.
As well as this, £850 million in social care grants will be paid up front this month in a move aimed at helping to ease immediate pressures on local authority cash flows.
Cherilyn said:
“As a former Cornwall Councillor I know just how vital it is that our local authorities, like Cornwall Council, are given the funding they need to support these vulnerable people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The funding will mean Cornwall Council can continue to provide essential services and support to those who need it most, and will provide immediate assistance for vital services in Cornwall including adult social care, children’s services, helping with homelesseness reduction and with people who need to be shielded.”
This announcement follows an initial £1.6 billion given to councils last month which supported the work they have done to free up vital hospital beds and deliver essential supplies to the vulnerable.
