Cherilyn Mackrory MP for Truro and Falmouth today toured South Crofty Mine to see the work being done to reopen and restore this historic mine for Cornwall.
The tour was hosted by Cornish Metals CEO Richard Williams and included a round table discussion over the future of Cornish mining. Cherilyn has campaigned extensively for the return of mining to Cornwall. In Parliament she sits on All-Party group for Critical Minerals and has regularly spoken in public to advocate for the new age of Cornish mining.
Also in attendance were other Cornish MPs Steve Double MP and Derek Thomas MP, and Conservative parliamentary candidate for Camborne and Redruth Connor Donnithorne.
Cornish Metals began to drain the historic mine last month and have made steady progress. They are on course to complete the work by the end of 2025 when they will begin Tin extraction. The company have produced a digital map of the mine, which allows them to identify mineral deposits in tunnels which remain submerged.
Cherilyn said:
“What Cornish Metals are doing at South Crofty is an example for all of Cornwall to follow. This isn’t a Poldark mine anymore; they’re using state of the art technology to make this a truly modern mine. But they haven’t forgotten the past either. I loved that each Shaft had a historic name, and some even still have wood from the 1900s excavation in their structure.
It's always a privilege to visit South Crofty and see the new age of Cornish mining happen. I can’t wait to go again soon and get the next chapter in the story of this site right here in the community.”
