Cherilyn Mackrory, MP for Truro and Falmouth, has welcomed Government plans for cleaner and more affordable energy to be made in Great Britain to boost long-term energy independence, security and prosperity.
The Government's British Energy Security Strategy sets out how Great Britain will accelerate the deployment of wind, new nuclear, solar and hydrogen, whilst supporting domestic oil and gas production in the nearer term – which could see 95% of electricity by 2030 being low carbon.
The strategy will also see a significant acceleration of nuclear, with an ambition of up to 24GW by 2050 to come from this safe, clean, and reliable power source. This would represent up to around 25% of our projected electricity demand.
Cherilyn said:
"If we are going to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, like flooding and heat waves, we need much more clean energy. Homegrown renewables are not only the cleanest energy available to us, but they're also the cheapest.
This strategy rightly prioritises ramping up wind and solar projects - which Cornwall is well placed to provide. I look forward to working with the Government to ensure we deliver net-zero, lower people's bills, and take back control of our energy supply."
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
"We're setting out bold plans to scale up and accelerate affordable, clean and secure energy made in Britain, for Britain – from new nuclear to offshore wind – in the decade ahead.
This will reduce our dependence on power sources exposed to volatile international prices we cannot control, so we can enjoy greater energy self-sufficiency with cheaper bills."
