Cherilyn Mackrory MP for Truro and Falmouth was delighted to meet Deep Digital Cornwall at Penryn university campus last week to see the work they are undertaking to modernise Cornwall’s mining industry.
This incredible project has produced a 3D map of Cornwall’s critical minerals, allowing the viewer to explore below the surface and identify specific mineral deposits which previously could not be identified or reached by conventional methods.
Following the demonstration by Deep Digital Cornwall, Cherilyn attended the Future of Mining conference, which explored what the new age of mining can do for the community. Critical minerals such as lithium are an essential component in the emerging green energy global market, and Cornwall is set to be a key player in its extraction, application, and use.
Cherilyn said:
Mining is as Cornish as pasties and jam-first. Right now, we are on the cusp of a new age of Cornish mining, and I am incredibly excited to see new technologies like these utilised. A return for Cornish mining will bring new jobs and innovation, attract local young people into lasting local careers, and bring a shared prosperity to communities across Cornwall.
Cornwall’s mineral wealth will lead the way as we transition into a low carbon future. Critical minerals such as tungsten, tin, and lithium are essential for ensuring a greener, cleaner future across the globe. We have the materials, and we have the will. It is right that Cornwall lead the way, and I applaud the work which is being done to make that a reality.
